Let Others Take the Pictures and Enjoy Yourself!

First cameras became simple and cheap and many decided to be their own amateur photographer. Then with digital photography so accessible, the average person can not only take the pictures, but print them or distribute them online for little cost. In spite of this, there are some good reasons, at least sometimes, to let others do the picture taking.

If you are the one to record an event like a family reunion, you know the bondage of always feeling like you must be looking for the perfect shot. To be good you must think like a photographer. Yet, when you get done, you have a set of good pictures but no memories of what happened? Recently our son called to tell us our granddaughter was in a parade streamed from the TV station on the Internet. I grabbed the camera but missed seeing her because I was trying to focus the camera. I wish I had just enjoyed the moment and waited until they sent the pictures.

Agreed, the electronics in cameras make them very versatile. However, keeping all its potential in your mind can be a different story. What do all the icons on top mean? How do you turn the flash or auto focus on or off? What does TV, P, M, or Av mean? Unless you are using these features regularly, you will probably forget them and they are then as useful as if they were not there at all.

If you are going to be the photographer at an event, you will need to get in some conspicuous place so you can get just the right angle. Further, you can lose a lot of friends by sticking the camera in their face every time they smile. Then you will coax them, tease them, bribe them, trick them until you can get the memory. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone else were the bad guy next time?

So you do it anyway and get a camera full of shots. Now as the hero others will be bothering you with requests for CDs of the shots, thinking you have lots of free time. Or they may impose on your spare time with requests to email the best 200 shots to them.

The problem is more than just the amount of time required. Though digital photography need never be printed, some friends simply don’t have access to this media. For them you will need to buy photographic paper and lots of ink for your printer. Did you say you don’t have a printer? If not, be sure to get one that has multiple ink cartridges so that they can be replaced individually when all the relatives keep asking for more prints.

If you want to look like a tourist, by all means hang a camera around your neck and draw it to your eye regularly. Oh, and don’t be shocked if people are offended that your picture taking seems to be more important than they are.

If you have a small car repair problem, you probably fix it yourself. But when a major problem arises, you take it to a mechanic. That is also true of photography. Don’t get rid of your camera. But when it comes to those really important events, hire an expert, kick up your heels, and enjoy yourself for once.
